Shape Up or Shape Out, Point Blank with Asian Weekly 29th December 2017

New Year is around the corner and what are you up to? Where are you in life? Where do you want to go?

There is no surprise that the number one and most common New Year’s eve resolution is to loose weight, followed by eat healthy and spend more time with family and friends. You must be wondering where do you lie in all of this? Well, that’s the thing, most lie through the year only to end up and make the same resolutions.

How about you go for losing more than just weight? Don’t get bogged down by the kilos you have to get off, maybe there is more in life you need to let go off. You can still have chocolates but learn to have the right ones and not over do it, if you calculate the amount of festivals to celebrate you will eventually end up eating a chocolate every 5 days.

How about you lose the drama in your life? From watching pathetic time waster TV serials to not over reacting in life! Turn a new leaf and choose to loose the crap and keep the treasure. De-clutter your friends list, even if this includes “family members” who do not add value to your life. But remember if you loose, you must add too. Things have to balance. Take a good stock of your friends and enemies and figure out what is best for you.

If you are dropping the calories then make sure you add them on for someone else. For every fine dining meal you give up, make sure you buy a school meal plan for someone else. That will make you feel better and for sure you will look better. Maybe 2017 was a year of gaining a new skill, then do not let it sit on the laptop, use it to benefit at least one more person and start the process of changing the world.

Since we are all used to the plastic ban, remember the fight has just started, you must still plant at least one tree. This will keep the balance of the earth in check. These are important resolutions. Instead of wasting time buying a new phone, you can choose to get better drainage for your compound and help the neighbourhood. The importance of community living has never been more significant than today. The digital world has connected us but we are strangers in person. Thus, make sure you reconnect with your friends in person in 2018. You never know what opportunities may arise for either of you.

Spending a lot of money over a New Year’s eve party makes sense if there is a purpose. Showing off is a big purpose in Kenya, from the big car syndrome to celebrity stalking. Fall prey if you will but remember these are shiny things that wear off at some point. Splash the money on savings, on a new home, on a retirement plan, medical insurance or a surprise future holiday. That way you will live for tomorrow while enjoying today.

You can choose to make your birthday the New Year of your life. There is no rule written on stone saying it has to start every 1st January. Cut yourself some slack but shape up or shape out when the time is right for you.

The Truth Will Set You Weight Free, Point Blank with Asian Weekly 13th January 2017

The Truth Will Set You Weight Free, Point Blank with Asian Weekly 13th January 2017

The Truth Will Set You Weight Free

What you are about to read is half-truth, because I am not a weight loss expert, doctor, dietician or exercise junkie. But this topic is affecting almost everyone even our little children.

According to the World Health Organization 2016 key facts sheet:

  • Worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980.
  • In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. Of these over 600 million were obese.
  • 39% of adults aged 18 years and over were overweight in 2014, and 13% were obese.
  • Most of the world’s population live in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight.
  • 41 million children under the age of 5 were overweight or obese in 2014.
  • Obesity is preventable.

The signs have never been more obvious that a good weight, diet and health will give you a better life. So what is the current situation like?

Those who have parents around 60 to 70 years will notice that they are either in control of their weight or not. This can be due to many factors, poor will power, difficult circumstances at home or work. I would not say lack of education because that is growing exponentially, it is only up to them, do not forget they are also in the bracket of potential heart attacks, diabetes and other ailments.

They need immediate weight loss and healthy routine.

Younger parents are probably still managing to eat well and stay active unless they are drinking their bellies away at Korogas. They may land you a million shillings deal, but also get you a double bill at the hospital when you collapse from alcohol poisoning or cholesterol. You would rather play the golf, walk and still get a deal.

The youngest parents are in the more complex zone. Making babies, making ends meet, making children, in-laws, family happy and the list goes on, they are unable to take care of themselves, rarely. They need a lot of assistance and determination to stop, set the trend right and actually also enjoy life. Having barbeques or coffees catch ups will not ease your weight loss, it helps in talking about issues but tackle the main issue, weight gain, you need to drop it. Yes I know easier said than done, the first step is always denial that you have put on weight and very easily most buy bigger clothes to console their new gained inches. No, that can not be your ticket out. You have to face the facts and teach your children that this is important.

Yes, let’s come to the overly image conscious children. Fair enough quite a few are mindful of not eating junk and want to remain slim. But do not deny them their basics, eat everything but of course in moderation. Make the children feel proud for who they are and not how they are.

Will exercise get you out of this rut? Yes and no.

Yes because you need to kick off the burning off the calories and stop being lazy. No because you can not run and then run after a big meal.

So balance things out.

Does a good diet get you off this rut? Yes and no.

Yes because if you eat healthy you are preserving your body.

No because exercise is a necessary addition.

It will boil down to a healthy attitude, yes that’s the only thing that can save you.

Do not compare and be little your body, it is the sophisticated machine giving you much more than you think.

Love yourself, love your body and give it the beautiful treatment it deserves.

Whatever variation works for you and please consult an expert especially if you are on obesity borderline or have crossed. Do not pull off any diet or exercise regime without proper supervision because you may damage more than you think. Some things are obvious, for example walking, drinking more water and so on but really take a moment and grasp what you are doing to your body and why? Is there an emotional burden you are carrying that is blocking your release of weight loss? Take care of you.

Back to Reality, Point Blank with Asian Weekly 6th January 2017

Back to Reality, Point Blank with Asian Weekly 6th January 2017

Back to Reality

Happy New Year! This is the time to reflect and take stock especially as you head back to work, so how can we make it easier?

The following are some useful tips to get you through 2017 at work:

Spend 5 minutes more with someone new in the company-

If you are employed especially in a big organization, try and get to know someone new. He or she could be the Security Guard, your Receptionist at the Godowns or the Accountant. Yes you would be surprised how a long way this kind of acquaintance can go.

If you are self-employed or the Boss then you have probably done the above, but you can do something new. Spend 5 minutes per day with a staff member. Do not make it too formal, catch him or her in action or make it seem effortless, for example, make the coffee yourself.

Write a Note per day-

Make a wish per day and stick it up at the entrance as a motto for the day and let everyone contribute. If you are working all the 365 days, just imagine who or what can inspire just about anybody even your client!

While Customer service experts will tell you how wonderful it is to give your customer a surprise call, yes it is true. It is also the best way to know how bad your product or service is. So do not drop this burden on the Customer Service department only share it with others, you will be surprised to know that sometimes the biggest complaints or compliments reach the Accounts department.

Walk the Mantra-

It is such a pity we still can not freely walk out of the office building and into a restaurant without having the danger of mugging.

Make walking a part of your routine the office, no matter how small it is. Remember every step counts, with all the diseases creeping up on anyone you could be next so why sit and grow a problem, walk and be free.

If you however want an outdoor experience and your office compound does not offer one, lobby for the rooftop, just don’t jump off it.

No matter what the situation, no matter what happened at home or in traffic, please learn to smile.

Learn to listen more and gossip less.

You will realize you have more time to be productive or daydream.

If you are the boss, then understand that when you smile you take the load of the problem by a thousand. If you are the employee and you smile you take the load of the problem by a million, just don’t be cocky.

The Environment Needs You-

People in Nairobi may never Car pool and it is a proven fact. But if in anyway you can reduce the carbon emissions, grow plants, use solar panels, and do as many of the environment tricks you are setting a trend.

Also note that a healthy attitude environment also makes the difference. Do not pollute it with petty politics, policies or pressure. Yes easier said then done, but no one said Rome was built in a day!

The Bollywood Carnival hosted by DJ Deshal, DJ Don and DJ Richie at the Venom Lounge in Nairobi on December 31 was impressive. The groovy tunes of 2013 from Bollywood had everybody having fun. The dance floor was electric, while the balcony was chilled out as people smoked sheesha. The VIP areas were also packed with groups of family and friends. Soon the countdown came and when the DJ announced 2014 is here, there was a loud cheer from the revellers.

Asian Scene- Kericho Vaisakhi Celebrations, The Star, 16th April

Kericho town is about six hours away from Nairobi but not far away for the Vaisakhi celebrations that took place around the world. Vaisakhi is considered the New Year for the Sikh community and is celebrated with much prayer and festivity.

At the Siri Ramgarhia Sabha Kericho battling against light drizzle that turned heavy they went on with the necessary festivities which including Morning Prayer and the change of the Sikh flag. For one year the flag post is covered with an orange cloth and dressed majestically sometimes with lights, this is a symbol that was created over three hundred years ago to let the travelers see in the sight the nearest Gurudwara or temple. Kericho has about eight Sikh families and there were some additional family members who had travelled from Nairobi to join in the celebration of Vaisakhi.
