The House of Atheism

House Atheist

A magnetic pole has two sides, the positive and the negative. Just like that we have the religious and we have the atheists.

According to the American Atheists website, they say the following:

Atheism is not a belief system nor is it a religion. While there are some religions that are atheistic (certain sects of Buddhism, for example), that does not mean that atheism is a religion. Two commonly used retorts to the nonsense that atheism is a religion are: 1) If atheism is a religion then bald is a hair color, and 2) If atheism is a religion then health is a disease. A new one introduced in 2012 by Bill Maher is, “If atheism is a religion, then abstinence is a sexual position.”

The only common thread that ties all atheists together is a lack of belief in gods and supernatural beings. Some of the best debates we have ever had have been with fellow atheists. This is because atheists do not have a common belief system, sacred scripture or atheist Pope. This means atheists often disagree on many issues and ideas. Atheists come in a variety of shapes, colors, beliefs, convictions, and backgrounds. We are as unique as our fingerprints.

And then according to the Atheists Society in Kenya, they say the following:

Simply put, atheism means the absence of theistic belief. That’s it. It doesn’t mean anything else. Atheism is not a religion, a philosophy, a worldview, or anything similar. It is not the conviction that there are no gods, ghosts, angels, etc. Rather, it is the absence of a belief that these things are real. Atheism is nothing more than the lack of belief in a god or gods. It is the position that deities do not exist.

AIK is formally registered as a Society under the Societies Act (Cap. 108), laws of Kenya. The registration certificate was signed on the 17th of February, 2016. We are really proud to be the first atheist society to be registered in Kenya. We currently have 115 registered members.

Thus, simply put atheism means not believing in that “superpower or celestial God that religious are making you bow down to and pray to”. The religious are convinced that God exists in one form or another, they have given him or her so many names, they have made legends out of their lives and deaths and they continue to have over a 1 billion followers. Atheists make up about 13% of the world’s population.

With an Atheist society being established in Kenya, where does our fate lie? Kenya is a primarily Catholic country and has a huge number of Muslims too, while the Hindus and Sikhs make up for the rest. The other Christians are there too such as Protestants and Methodists but most importantly the Tribal religion still prevails. We might be a small nation of over 40 million people but our religious differences can create major issues.

Having an Atheist society is opening up the platform for the magnetic pole theory. And why not? We should be allowed to exercise our beliefs as long as they are not exorcist or kill another human being, or divide the nation. There is space for differences. However this is a stepping stone for the future of making Kenyans accept that there are Gays and Transgenders amongst us and we should recognize them officially. They are being persecuted almost everyday secretly but a time will come when they will get their own recognition.

Being an Atheist is not being a Westerner, they too have their share of backlash and non-acceptance, but be open to what or who human beings can be or want to follow, is where we will need to exercise caution and tolerance.
