It was a night of rewards, inspiration and admiration. The first ever Kenyan Sikh Achievers Awards conceptualized and organized by Ramgarhia Youth Association took place on Saturday 9th August at the Sikh Temple Pangani. The event brought together nominees dressed up as stars, big sponsors and the representative Narayan Swamy of the High Commission of India, Nitin Malde Chairman of Hindu Council of Kenya, Hon Sunjeev Kaur Birdi MP and Cabinet Secretary Dr Hassan Wario.
Hon Sunjeev Kaur Birdi MP challenged the community to bring back the Kenyan hockey glory days and Cabinet Secretary Dr Hassan Wario very much appreciated the invitation and reiterated that “the place for Asians is not temporary, it is permanent”.
Radio Africa’s Kamal Kaur was the winner in the Radio category, while other big names of winners include Kenyan hockey legend Inderjit Singh Matharu, literary specialist Upkar Singh Hunjan, multi-talented Gupz Saund and popular DJ Preetpal Channa. As the Vice-Chairman RYA, Inderjit Thethy pointed out “the losers aren’t the nominees who haven’t won, but those who don’t take part”.
The categories included Sports, Media, Music and Dance and they were judged by a panel of three prominent personalities, Mr Kanwaljit Singh Syan, Harpreet Acharya and Jaswinder Singh Gharial.
The event’s emcees were Harleen Jabbal and East FM’s Vikash Pattni and the entertainment included a bharat natyam dance piece by the Channa sisters of Sachliv Channa, Rashpal Channa and Jasmine Channa and then a dhol and thumbi musical fusion by Arvinder Mudher and Gurpreet Roopra.
