On Sunday 7th July at the Siri Gurdwara Ramgarhia Railway South ‘C’, the Sikh Women’s Society held a special cultural programme titled “Pehchaan” in commemoration of Siri Guru Arjan Devji’s Shahidi Purab.
The idea was to have an evening of poetry on martydom, sacrifice and the one’s identity. However noble and great set up of the hall, there was a mix up in the sequence and timing of the event. A chief guest arriving late is norm but when the master of ceremonies is not synchronized it becomes agitating, the responsibility of the podium was shifting between Sikh Women Society’s Amarjeet Rayat and the writer and director of the show, Mr Ram Sharda and there was confusion and waste of time. Anyway the speeches got underway, including from the Hon. MP Sunjeev K Birdi, Sikh Women Society Chairperson Mrs. Inderjet K Rehal, Chief Guest Mrs. Ravinder K Saundh and the Chairman Gurdwara Sahib South C Mr. Jaswinder S Gharial. Eventually the only performance that managed to sneak its way into the beginning of the programme was poetry and song by Upkar Singh and his team. By the time the Universal Peace Federation Kenya & Women Federation for World Peace paid homage to the world martyrs and peace laureates, the audience had thinned and dawn set it in.
The attempt to make it a gracious poetry and tribute evening was dwindling in the glitter of the decorations and the Sikh Women Society need to improve next time.
