He is young, stylish and has one of the largest fan followings online. This is the artist known as “Yo!Yo!Honey Singh” and he was performing for the first time in Kenya on Saturday 24th November at the Simba Saloon Carnivore. There were a lot of firsts that night, including his accompanying rappers and singers like Mafia Mundeer and J-Star and this was a different flavor including their on-stage camaraderie and dance.
There were no warm up acts and it was straight to business, which was singing with the crowd made up of teenagers including 25 year olds who knew all the words to his songs. It was also the first time I noticed many parents with their children, which was an indication that the youth is crazy about him. His message through music is also not vulgar but in way there is some sort of education, such as “being brown is cool, money does get you everything and don’t forget where you came from, respect is most important”. He is quickly becoming the most sought after rapper in Bollywood for recent hits for films like Son of Sardaar, Cocktail and Khiladi 786. For the promoters Muzikzon Entertainment and Wide Angles Vision, he was also a shining star performer for Kenyans and there is demand to see him rock the stage once again.
