How much do spend on your food shopping? And did you know it was possible to make an excellent three course meal from a budget of only three thousand shillings? That’s what I discovered Saturday afternoon 16th June at the Sarit Centre where the Sun Gold Sunrice Super Chef Pro was into their second round. Each chef was asked to work out their menu and then go shopping for about an hour with the three thousand shillings, come back and cook that meal in about ninety minutes.
It was no easy task but they are professionals and they did put a good fight in the kitchen. Chef Alex Njue who was representing Sarova Panafric Hotel hopes to have his own restaurant in the future and appreciates the current change in the food scene for Nairobi where eating out has become a better experience and challenge for the chef. Meanwhile Christina Crawford from Dormans Kenya is not new to being the only woman in such a competition and she put her faith in local and seasonal products to buy within the budget to make a world class menu. Hosting it at the Sarit Centre gave an aerial view to the competition which was brilliant for watchers and the crowd was encouraging the entire afternoon. There was a new entry into the judging panel and he likes to call himself Palu, who is a freelance Food & Beverage consultant. His advice for the chefs was to go with their gut feeling because you are always under pressure and do what you think is right.
