When I met Gupz Saund I was a presenter and producer at East FM. Part of my work was to mentor new presenters or radio jockeys as they are sometimes known. Gupz came up to me and said “I don’t want to be a presenter! I want to be a good presenter”. This was a sign of his commitment to a radio career but it said a lot about his personality that he was not the one to give up. Thus, his journey began of both radio and as a musician his talents developed further as he was exposed to technology, music and yes the fans. Your fans are always your best critics. Now his fans are going to get the chance to follow his bigger dream that of a record label artist as he leaves East FM. What this means is that the artist is signed up by a major recording company which takes you around the world, invests in your talent and showcases it to a wider audience. It is a dream come true for him and there is more we are going to be hearing from him.
Musicians have more competition thanks to YouTube and Facebook, anyone can put up their song or video and get noticed. But when you want strategy and reach out to your fans through shows, you need a record company to sign you up. He was nine years old when he started to play the tabla (traditional Indian acoustic) and the keyboard. He has maintained a different style and has written and composed most of his music. His song “kerre velle” with UK’s award winning duo Metz ‘n’ Trix gained popularity worldwide. The most recent song “Hey Hey” featuring Blitzkrieg is another chart topper. He has been reported to be the first artist in Kenyan history to claim 4th Position on the iTunes World Music Chart!
As a presenter he started off on a Saturday morning show with Pinky Virdee in 2001 and went on to host the Breakfast Show for three and a half years and finally the drive time show “ The Rush” which has been doing till date on East FM. His humility allowed him to take mentorship and learn from mistakes and his role models included Arjun Ruzaik, former Managing Director of East FM, Sudhir Vidhyarthi the Vice-Chairman of Radio Africa Group and Patrick Quarcoo.
To a chart topper, good presenter and wonderful person, may your dreams come true!
