Hey you all Happy Valentine’s Day, here is what went down last week.
Nairobi has a different audience altogether and one thing is for sure each performer has their own fan base. I can’t recall the last time that there were more than one or two shows on the same night but all the same it was an entertaining night.
The late Jagjit Singh has millions of fans worldwide but here in Kenya he seemed to have a special place in the hearts of artists such as Azar Mughal, who was gifted a harmonium by him. Azar is also an exceptional artist and the Jagjit Singh portrait that hung over the stage was done by him at the Anghiti Restaurant. Joining Azar in this tribute concert which was up close and candid with fans singing along and reminiscing over the songs with the famous whiskey were the amazing Ustad Khadim Hussein on percussion (tabla) and his sons Adil Hussein and Altaf Hussein on the santoor, and the beautiful female singer Sonia Birdi. The event was coordinated by Azar’s family and attended by a wonderful support of friends, hosted by East FM’s Ghazal Show Presenter Allaudin Qureshi. His knowledge and poetry for explaining Ghazal music which is close to heart was as he so eloquently put it “saaraag jit liya tha” (Jagjit Singh won hearts worldwide).
See next post for the other stories, thanks.
